'RU authorities responsible for violence'

The Rajshahi University authorities' indifference to students' long-standing demand for security in dormitories led to Saturday's massive violence on the campus, said several senior teachers and student leaders.Teachers and students yesterday continued to protest the attack on them demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Faisul Islam Faruki and Proctor Prof Shamsul Alam Sarker. On Saturday, pro-government Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists and controversially appointed employees and teachers backed by police attacked the students and teachers protesting the intrusion of three unidentified youths into Tapashi Rabeya Hall. The students and teachers also alleged that some pro-government teachers who made the attacks were inducted into committee formed to probe the Saturday's incident. The authorities, meanwhile, estimated the loss in the violence at over Tk 1.5 crore. At least 40 buses were damaged and a dozen buildings were vandalised during the violence. Intrusion of three youths into Rabeya Hall on Friday night is not an isolated incident, said Prof Entajul Haque, convenor of progressive teachers' association. The RU authorities did never respond to any complaint made by the students about stealing and snatching inside halls, said a senior chemistry teacher. "Criminal incidents are commonplace at dormitories but the residential students failed to get any assurance of their security from the administration," said RU JCD President Motiar Rahman. Although the JCD and Shibir activists made the attack on students during the Saturday's violence, they withdrew themselves after deployment of BDR and extra police. Monira Islam Mony, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Rokeya Hall, said at least a dozen of memorandums with demands for security have been submitted to the administration since 2001, but no steps were taken to check crimes.
