1000 hartals enforced in 33 years

Over 1,000 hartals were enforced in last 33 years across the country incurring a loss of more than Tk 70,000 crore, said the leaders of a social organisation at a human chain yesterday.

They said over 300 people were killed, and more than 20,000 injured during those hartals.

The human chain was formed by Projonmer Chetona at Muktangon in the city yesterday.

The leaders of the organisation urged all political parties to hold discussion among them instead of enforcing hartal for the greater interest of the country.

They also called for finding out alternative ways of making protest, rather than enforcing hartal and strike.

They demanded of the government to take effective steps to stop the practice of hartal.

"All political parties should reject hartal and find out alternative ways especially discussion among them for solving their disputes," said Golam Nabi Hossain, convenor of the organisation.

Hartal and strike also hamper the economic growth of the country and create price hike of essentials, he added.

Hartal and strike give us only sufferings and obstruct the practice of democracy, said Motiur Rahman Moti, joint convenor of the organisation.

The members of the organisaton carried placards, banners and posters during the human chain.

Joint Convenor Kudrate Elahi Liton, Khairul Islam Sohel, Tonmoy Mahmud, Mahbub Hossain, Nizam-uddin Arif and Abdur Faruq were present on the occasion.
