'42 killed by law enforcement agencies last month'


Forty-two people were killed by the law enforcement agencies last month, according to a report released by Odhikar, a human rights organisation, yesterday.

Of them, 38 died in 'crossfire' and four died after torture in the custody of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police.

Besides, eight people died in the police and jail custody.

The Odhikar prepared the report on human rights situation in the country on the basis of reports published in the leading dailies.

Of the 42 victims, 22 were killed by the Rab, four by Chetah and Cobra forces and 16 others by police, the report said.

Also, 49 were killed, 453 injured, two abducted and 192 arrested in incidents of human rights violation related to politics, it added.

Journalists also fell victim to violence during the period.

Dipankar Chakraborti, executive editor of a local newspaper Durjoy Bangla was killed and two newsmen were injured, and seven were threatened during the period. Cases were also filed against seven journalists.

On violence against women and children, the report said a total of 66 women and children were raped and ten of them killed. Thirty people, including 25 women, fell victim to acid attacks.

A total of 92 children were tortured during the period. Of them, 27 were killed, 19 raped and 19 abducted.

Also, 13 women were killed and four tortured for dowry. And one woman committed suicide in dowry-related incident.

In the incidents of human rights violation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, 13 people were injured, three abducted and 18 arrested, the report said.
