DU syndicate likely to approve 73 'controversial' promotions today

The Dhaka University's (DU) Syndicate, the highest decision making body, is likely to approve the 'controversial' promotion of 73 officers at a meeting today.

But the university authorities are divided over the promotion of the 73 officers at a time, sources said. The list was prepared violating university rules and regulation, they added.

They said, as per rules, the university authorities could not promote more than 40 officers at a time.

At least 15 of the 73 officers do not qualify for promotion and many of them do not fulfil all prerequisites to get promotion. Sources said a senior official of the university has been pursuing their promotions on political and regional considerations.

The upgradation committee headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof AFM Yusuf Haider stuck to its decision on 73 officers defying the Syndicate request to review the list and their qualifications. Earlier, the Syndicate headed by Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz asked the committee to review the matter, one top university official said.

He said the committee wrote that the list it finalised on promotion was right and the syndicate could change it if thinks.

The VC told the Daily Star yesterday that if the list was prepared on the basis of merit and qualification, there would be no problem.

On the other hand, the authorities dropped names of three class three employees recommended for promotion as section officers due to the note of dissent by the treasurer at a meeting on Sunday after the news published in different dailies.

The treasurer Prof Syed Rashidul Hasan told the journalists that the committee was forced to drop their names from the list of promotion as no rules or regulations were followed in their recommendations.

The selection committee headed by Pro-VC has also brought changes in recommendations for appointment of three section officers. Earlier, the committee finalised a list of three Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders for the posts.

Meanwhile, one top university official is now trying to appoint the wife of a former JCD leader of Dhaka College as section officer, sources said.

The Vice Chancellor said that he did not know the selection yet. He said he would see it at the syndicate meeting today.
