Another uphill battle
BD-NZ first ODI today
Shahadat Hossain, Chittagong
After a break of three days the Bangladesh cricket team once again will be thrown into the international spotlight today when the first game of the three-match RC Cola one-day series against New Zealand begins at the MA Aziz Stadium. The 50-over-contest will start at 9am with STAR Sports and state-run Bangladesh Television providing live coverage. Although the Black Caps will be without their captain Stephen Fleming for the first time in recent memory, his deputy Daniel Vettori boldly announced that he was considering nothing short of a comprehensive victory in the abridged version after completing a 2-0 Test whitewash. "We want to win straight away the three matches in the same rhythm as we did in the Test series," Vettori told reporters after his team's final practice at the second Test venue of the country. Vettori claimed 20 wickets as the Kiwis won both Tests by innings inside four days. But whether Vettori said that or not, the home side know that they will be up against it again in their 96th one-day appearance. With only three wins to their credit and surprisingly none at home, the Tigers however still will be hoping that the fans cheer them on. "I am not thinking whether we will win the first ODI or not. All I want to see is the batsmen and bowlers put in their best effort. And that might give something for the spectators to cheer about," said Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar, who missed the latter part of the year including the two Tests against New Zealand due to a thumb injury. The Bangladesh think-tank yesterday announced the final eleven with local boy Nafees Iqbal and all-rounder Mushfiqur Rahman being left out. The omission of Nafees, who top-scored in Bangladesh's last one-day match against West Indies in the ICC Champions Trophy, was heartbreaking for the Chittagonions. But chief selector Faruque Ahmed defended the decision saying that Nafees did not fit in the scheme of things. "We have decided to field three all-rounders sacrificing one batsman and that's why Nafees was left out. But he is very much in the side for the next two games in Dhaka," he said. Bangladesh might open with other local boy Aftab Ahmed and Javed Omar while Bashar will come in at his customary number three position followed by Mohammad Ashraful, Rajin Saleh and wicket-keeper Khaled Mashud. Then it will be the turn of three all-rounders -- left-arm spinner Mazarul Islam, Khaled Mahmud and Mohammad Rafique. Young Nazmul Hossain will share the new ball with experienced Tapash Baisya. The wicket at the MA Aziz Stadium is expected to produce a lot of runs. "The wicket as usual is going to be very flat and I think it will slow a bit later on. If we apply ourselves on this wicket there are decent runs to be had. But it is a matter of having self-belief," said Bashar, who has never found one-day cricket as successful as his Test career.
