PM asks party men

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday asked her party men to work unitedly for yet better performance in the next general elections, countering the smear campaign launched by the opposition at home and abroad.She announced that meetings and mass contacts would start all over the country after the Eid to mobilise public support infavour of the BNP and rebut the "propaganda" being carried out by the main opposition party. It has to be done because the opposition will always try to create "chaos" and spread propaganda. "They do not enjoy the confidence of the people and that is why they are spreading falsehood in foreign countries," the prime minister, also chairperson of the BNP, told her party's grassroots leaders at a meeting at the International Conference Centre (ICC). "BNP is a democratic party and the main target of any democratic organisation is election," she told them. She accused the opposition of creating chaos in parliament besides spreading propaganda at home and abroad. "You have to tell the people about the achievements of the government and the opposition's propaganda through public meetings," the prime minister said. "We (BNP) have always fulfilled our commitments to the people," the prime minister said and asked the leaders and workers to stand united and accept all the decisions of the party and the government to strengthen the organisation for future success. The BNP chairperson forewarned that Awami League would be "more oppressive" if they returned to power. She referred to thousands of cases filed against the BNP activists during the past AL rule. Khaleda also warned that some people were trying to create artificial crisis of essential commodities in the market. She assured that there was enough stock of food in the country and more in the pipeline. She reminded that the present government rebuilt the country's economy left in a shambles by the past Awami League government. Referring to the oppression perpetrated by the past Awami League regime, she said, "We have always assured of stopping terrorism and you have seen what we have done." A total of 28 upazila level leaders from 14 districts of Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions addressed the meeting where they suggested more access of the grassroots leaders to the ministers and local members of parliament of the party. The speakers demanded immediate solution to intra-party conflicts in some places, preventive measures to check price hike of essentials and development and maintenance of roads in different areas. BNP standing committee member KM Obaidur Rahman also spoke at the function conducted by Prime Mnister's Political Secretary Harris Chowdhury. Ministers and members of parliament from Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions were present on the occasion.
