Nrityanchal: Where East meets West
Dance organisation Nrityanchal is looking westwards, says a recent press release. Tying up with the London-based company called Shoc, the organisation plans to stage dance drama Cobra, which is expected to win the attention of the international audience. The drama has been compiled from the folklore of Bangladesh. The dance drama will be staged under the direction of Hi Ching, a multi-disciplinary dance artiste and teacher who will do the choreography, production, design and music. He will be in Dhaka this December. During his three-week stay in Dhaka, he will work with Nrityanchal on planning, direction, rehearsals and costumes. Next year he will visit Bangladesh again and give a final shape to the drama. Hi Ching has plans to direct the dance drama with the interjection of local dance language, different forms of ballet, contemporary dance of the West and martial arts. He is assisted by Shamim Ara Nipa and Shibli Mohammad, directors of Nrityanchal, while Muhammad Jahangir will coordinate the international aspects of the production. A video documentary will be screened on the rehearsal and relevant activities of the dance drama. Provided all ground work is done, Cobra will premiere at the Stratford Royal Theatre in London next September. The organisers also plan to stage Cobra in other cities of England.
