Eid Extravaganza
All that glitters
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes

The boulevards and lanes stretching from New Market to Dhanmondi and beyond are winking with rhinestones and seed pearls. These deck the gold bracelets for Eid with their outlining with scarlet red, jet black, blue and green. They look as rich as any collection in Sheba's boudoir or a maharani's chamber. This imitation jewellery, sports ruby red, golden amber, lily pink, turquoise and sky blue stones in semi precious and cut glass or marble in the kundan sets. These rival the long, hanging pendants for the ears and lockets or necklaces that can match any real collection for their lure and sensuous impact. They carry motifs in floral wreathes or geometrical shapes. These creations could easily be worn instead of the American diamonds, lapis lazuli, garnets and sapphires, and other stone creations that are sported by our women young and old. At the same time, they avoid the greed of the city snatchers and ruffians who can't resist the beckoning of jewels on fine ears or Nefretiti necks. Again, they suit the bourgeois pocket, specially when there is the desire to wear something chic and nouveau. Budgeting for the begum does not come easy and the desire to match the sari or shalwar-kameez or bell-bottomed trousers and embroidered chiffon fatua is understandable specially when the heart sings with the festive Eid mood. It's not only in silver and gold -- silver dominating -- that one finds the irresistible mod jewellery, that nod and wink at one, luring one to buy these accessories at reasonable budget for the bourgeois. This is so, whether it be for the adult or the teenager, or even the tiny tot, who is not averse to decking herself, when festive occasions come. There are also the wooden and clay sets for the neck and ears, that range from ones with simple flowers and leaves, to ones that bear inimitable patters -- in all shades of colours , with Indian red, sky blue and black -and -white . These are embellished with beads and simple but eye-catching motifs. The inlaid bone jewellery that range from earrings to long, looping necklaces with heavy pendants and bracelets to match are equally irresistible and sophisticated. Again, actual tinted rocks and semi precious stones complete the collection, as in the case of scintillating corals, combined with silver and white beads. Cosmetics Collection To match the trendy and fashion-conscious woman about town are the range of lipstick, nail polish, hair-gel, and of course the array of henna cones in plastic paper and silver sheets. Imported and local makes-- with brand names that titillate the taste -- are there on the counters, inviting one to take one's pick for the occasion. Subtle shades of kohl, shiny and matte lip-liners and lip gloss will be flaunted, and notes on fashion will be exchanged, once the necessary purchase is done, weeks before the festive occasion.
