Int'l convention on academic quality control in Dec

An international convention on academic quality control will be held in Dhaka in December to instill modern management skills to future generation professionals.Education Minister Dr Osman Farruk will inaugurate the three-day convention titled 'Seventh International Convention on Students Quality Control Circles' at Dhaka Residential Model College on December 17. Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (Rehab), Bangladesh Society for Total Quality Management (BSTQM), and Dhaka Residential Model College are jointly organising the event to be attended by 1,000 academics, quality experts, students, teachers and administrators from around the globe. The convention will focus on quality and excellence in educational institutions through quality management to groom quality professionals capable of contributing to national development, said AMM Khairul Bashar, general secretary of BSTQM and convenor of the event, at a press conference at the National Press Club yesterday. Rehab President Toufiq M Seraj said skilled professionals could be groomed by incorporating quality management in academic curricula to boost productivity. "What we see in business houses is that all sectors lack efficient managers. Many have become top executives of a company hereditarily. So, there is a crying need to fill the present vacuum with quality professionals," he added. Seraj said Rehab has got involved in the convention as part of its social responsibility. "Pursuit for grooming skilled manpower should start from primary education level. If we can produce quality manpower, it will help boost productivity in all spheres of life contributing to national growth," he said. Experts from India, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal and host Bangladesh will present 20 keynote papers in working sessions. Participating students will present 45 case studies on their efforts for improving quality management at their institutions. A debate on 'Only Quality Education Can Establish Peace in the Society' will be held at a session to be participated by 48 debaters. Students will also take part in collage and painting competition whose theme will be 'Quality Education for Peace'. Principal of Dhaka Residential Model College ABM Abdul Mannan, Rehab Senior Vice-president Md Abdul Awal, Vice-president SM Anwar Hossain and General Secretary Mahmudul Hassan were present at the press conference.
