Our Correspondent, Netrakona
There have been allegations of gross irregularity in appointment of people in 62 posts of third and fourth class employees in the health department in Netrakona. The Civil Surgeon Mainuddin Ahamed Chowdhury left his official residence on the night of October 27 as several hundred people who had applied for jobs thronged his office and residence protesting the irregularities. The Civil Surgeon left Netrakona soon after the interview of applicants was taken and appointment process was finalised, sources claimed. They alleged that officials took bribe from them promising appointment, but they did not get jobs. The affected people and leaders of different political parties here have demanded cancellation of the appointments. Seven thousand people applied for the jobs. Their interview continued for six days. Talking to local newsmen Nsima Akter and Nur Islam of Kendua upazila alleged that office assistant at the Civil Surgeon's office Golam Morshad Kajal took Tk two lakh as bribe from them assuring them of appointments in MLSS posts. Biplob Chandra Sarker of Netrakona Sadar upazila alleged the Civil Surgeon's office took Tk one lakh as bribe from him for appointment in the post of Mechanical Assistant. But their names were not on the lists of appointed people, published on October 28, they said. Like Nasima, Biplob and Nur Islam, many others also alleged that the Civil Surgeon's office took bribe from them promising jobs. But they did not get jobs, they said. When contacted, some officers at the Civil Surgeon's (CS) office said the CS went to village home Rangpur on seven days' leave. Mentionably, CS Mainnuddin Ahamed Chowdhury while talking to a group of newsmen at his residence earlier said that he was under heavy pressure from different quarters including a State Minister, a lawmaker and high officials of the Health Department to recruit their men. They sent separate lists, he had said. On Saturday, Masud Rana Chowdhury, son of a freedom fighter, filed a case against the CS with a court in Netrakona for not appointing persons under the quota for families of freedom fighters. The court asked to the CS to maintain status quo as regards the appointment process.
