Pro-liberation political forces must immediately forge a united front to oust the ruling coalition, achieve victory in the next general election and form a national government to meet people's hope and aspiration, said senior leaders of different opposition parties in the city yesterday. "A united front of all the pro-liberation political parties on the basis of national programmes is a must to make the oust-government movement a success, win the general election and form a new government," said Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Huq Inu on the occasion of the party's 32nd founding anniversary. Terming the incumbent ruling coalition repressive, he said the like-minded parties will have to reach a consensus to end the present regime. Inu admitted that pro-liberation parties including the JSD made many irreparable mistakes in the political process of Bangladesh in the past, and those mistakes should not be repeated. "We must unite immediately on the basis of a minimum programmes," said the presidium member of main opposition Awami League Abdur Razzaq. It is a crucial need of the time to forge unity among all the pro-liberation forces to win the fight against the repressive BNP-led coalition government, he added. The next general election must be held under the supervision of a caretaker government and an election commission both of which will be absolutely neutral, said Razzaq. "There has to be a meaningful unity of like-minded political fronts against the ruling coalition," Gono Forum General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Manik said, adding, "Otherwise it will not work, as people want sincere commitment of the politicians for their welfare." Like-minded parties should immediately form a greater alliance against the militant fundamentalist element in the government, said General Secretary of Workers Party of Bangladesh Bimal Biswas. "Pro-liberation and left-leaning parties must realise the urgent need for unity to serve a common minimum programme with a clear-cut commitment," said JSD Executive President Mainuddin Khan Badal. Secretary General of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh Major (Retd) MA Mannan said the common people will soon bring down the government for its misrule. JSD leaders Meer Hossain Akhtar, Sayed Zafar Sazzad, Mazharaul Huq and Nazmul Huq Pradhan also spoke.
