Bayern didn't expect this

Bayern Munich suffered a major setback ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Juventus when they fell to a shock 2-0 away defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday. Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio was dismissed in the second half for stamping on Czech opponent Vaclav Sverkos, capping a miserable afternoon for Felix Magath's Bavarian outfit. Playing Bayern in your first match in charge is not ideal but interim 'Gladbach chief Horst Koppel, who stepped in to replace Holger Fach when he was sacked on Wednesday, kept a cool head - and goals from Marcelo Pletsch and Joris van Hout made his job easier. Pletsch stole in front of Robert Kovac to head the 49th minute opener before van Hout clinched the points with a diving header seven minutes from time as Bayern pushed on. A third defeat of the campaign means Bayern slip to fifth in the German table, four points adrift of leaders VfL Wolfsburg who had Bulgarian international Martin Petrov to thank for their latest win. Petrov scored an incredible four goals, including two penalties as Wolfsburg came from two goals down to defeat Mainz 05 4-3. Elsewhere Schalke 04 manager Ralf Rangnick guided his side to a fifth straight league win in a thrilling 3-2 victory over VfB Stuttgart. All the goals came in a frantic first half that began with Brazilian Ailton scoring after just forty seconds to register his third goal in as many matches. Further strikes from Georgian international Levan Kobiaschvili (2) and Brazilian Lincoln (25) gave Stuttgart a mountain that proved too steep to climb. After going the first eight games unbeaten Stuttgart have now lost three in a row. Rangnick meanwhile created Bundesliga history becoming the first manager to win his first five matches in the league. Schalke are now second in the table in a topsy-turvy season that saw them flirt with the relegation zone early in the season causing the dismissal of Jupp Heynckes as coach. Schalke's arch rivals Borussia Dortmund notched their first home win of the season with ten-men Bayer Leverkusen on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline.. German champions Werder Bremen also lost ground in the title race in a 1-1 draw with SV Hamburg at the Weserstadion.
