Ershad Shikdar's accomplices acquitted

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Saturday acquitted Jamai Faruk and Liaquat Lashkar, two accomplices of notorious criminal Ershad Shikdar, of murdering Joynal Sheikh.

An appellate bench comprising Justice Ruhul Amin and Justice Tofazzal Hossain gave the verdict.

Earlier, Judge Hasan Imam of the Special Court, Khulna awarded death sentence to Faruk and life imprisonment to Liaquat in 2001.

Ershad, also a death convict in the case, was executed in Khulna jail on May 10 for killing Jubo League leader Khalid Hossain.

Liaquat and Faruk appealed to the Supreme Court after the High Court had rejected their appeal and upheld the Special Court's verdict.

Railway security guard Joynal was hacked to death at Ershad's ice factory in Khulna Skid Ghat in 1998. His dead body was dumped in Bhairab river.

A case was filed with Sonadanga Police Station in October, 1999 and police pressed charges in January, 2000.

Faruk and Liaquat, who were top men of Ershad's killing squad, are now behind bars with death penalty in four and life term in six murder cases.
