Leaders of Sammilito Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP) yesterday demanded that the government immediately cancel the 'unconstitutional appointment' of 19 judges. They also called for resignation of the law minister and trial of the persons responsible for the controversial appointment. "Otherwise, we will launch a movement for the ouster of this government and people are ready to rally behind us," SASP Convenor eminent lawyer Barrister Amir-ul Islam told a gathering of lawyers. "We will continue to boycott the courts of those judges until the government takes actions in this regard," he added. Former president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Wajayer Farruk demanding resignation of the government said the appointment of 19 judges in violation of the constitution has brought disgrace on the judiciary of the country. Bar President Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud in his speech criticised the chief justice for not taking cognisance of the controversial appointment. He also criticised the chief justice for meeting 14 of the 19 judges. Rokan said the appointment has badly dented the image of the judiciary. "It is unfortunate for us when we, the lawyers, are striving for the independence of the judiciary," said Mahbub-e-Alam, former secretary of the Bar. He sought for a robust role of the chief justice in dealing with the issue. Advocates Bashir Ahmed (secretary of SCBA), Abdul Baset Majumdar, Rezaur Rahman, Layekuzzaman Mollah, Nurul Islam Sujan and Subrata Chowdhury, among others, addressed the meeting organised at the auditorium of the SCBA.
