Pak PM starts tour of 3 Saarc states today

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz begins a four-day trip to Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh today as part of a tour of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) nations, the foreign ministry said.

Aziz will travel to India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, the three other Saarc nations, after Eid, the Islamic festival in the middle of this month marking the end of Ramadan.

He is visiting the six nations in his capacity as Saarc chairman, with Pakistan holding the position this year on a rotational basis.

"The Prime Minister will utilise the visits... to reaffirm to his interlocutors Pakistan's commitment to regional cooperation. He will exchange views with them on Pakistan's vision for Saarc," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Nepal's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat told AFP in Kathmandu that Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Aziz would on Monday discusss issues ranging from "control of terrorism and bilateral economic cooperation ... to development of Nepal's vast hydro power."

"Terrorist activities have gravely affected the economy, tourism and social life in both Pakistan and Nepal", the official said.

During his visit, Aziz is also scheduled to meet King Gyanendra, a foreign ministry statement said.

Deuba will host an official dinner for Aziz, it said.

The Pakistani premier will go on to Dhaka on Tuesday, the statement said.
