The Customs Intelligence and Investigation (CII) yesterday seized two truckloads of electronic goods worth around Tk 1.5 crore which the Vietnam Embassy imported. On information that the embassy, located on road No. 51 in Gulshan, imported taxable goods in a tax-free container, a CII team, led by its Deputy Director Motiur Rahman Khan, waited outside the emba{sy entrance in the evening. The officials stopped the two covered vans when they came out of the embassy gate at around 5:30pm and asked for documents. As the drivers could not provide the necessary papers, the officials brought the two trucks to their Moghbazar office. The vans were examined in presence of National Board of Revenue Chairman Khairuzzaman Chowdhury, and found to have contained around 3,000 VCDs. The CII arrested drivers Shahidul Islam and Saiful Islam and seized the goods for non-payment of tax, said CII sources. The drivers told the CII officials that one Hossain hired them to transport the goods to Taltola of Gulshan. The CII sources said they would write to the embassy about the matter.
