Nat'l swimming begins today

About 600 swimmers will be vying for 50 gold medals as the 20th Na-tional Swimming Championships begin at the Army Swimming Pool today.

Bangladesh Swimming Federation (BSF) president and Chief of Naval Staff Shah Iqbal Mujtaba will declare the four-day meet open.

BSF general secretary Shahabuddin Ahmed yesterday told a press conference that they were forced to organise the meet at the Army pool due to unavailability of the National Swimming Complex.

"We had requested the National Sports Council (NSC) to get the complex ready for the event, but they are still working," Shahbuddin said.

"We have been told that the pool will be usable from October 9 and we will start a part of the training for the SAF Games preparations from the next day," he said adding that 40 swimmers including 15 females from the 15-17 years age group would receive training at the residential camp.

A total of 45 teams will take part in swimming, diving and water polo events. Last year, 46 teams participated in the championship where 25 new national records were set.
