Skop calls strike for tomorrow
Staff Correspondent
The leaders of Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (Skop) yesterday vowed to make tomorrow's 24-hour strike a success to press the government to implement an agreement signed between the two sides. The Skop, an organisation of labourers and employees, on September 5 called the strike commencing at 6:00am tomorrow at all mills and factories, offices, shops and transportation. The labour and employment ministry and the Skop signed an agreement on the organisation's nine-point demand in January. The demands include declaring minimum national wage, stopping de-regularisation of state-owned industries, restarting all closed mills and factories and enacting democratic labour law. "The government had assured us of implementing our demands in four months but has not done so yet, violating the agreement," Wazedul Islam Khan, Skop coordinator, told The Daily Star yesterday. According to the labour law, the Skop can take the issue to the court, he said but did not confirm any move to this end. Lawmaker Shahjahan Khan, executive president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, Abdul Matin Master, president of Jatiya Sramik League, among others, addressed the rally. The left-leaning 11-party alliance also organised a rally in Muktangan in support of the strike. Communist Party Bangladesh President Manjurul Ahsan Khan, Gono Forum General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Manik and Workers Party General Secretary Bimol Bishwas were present.
