Mottau calls for concentration

Bangladesh's batting coach Owen Mottau believes that that the only way to overcome the Tigers' present slump and shut the mouths of the critics in the process is with the bat and they have to do that in the home series against New Zealand.

With that aim the Sri Lankan-born Australian Mottau is all set to introduce a comprehensive batting routine from today which he believes would help the boys concentrate more. Captain Habibul Bashar is also expected to take the bat in his hand for the first time since injuring his thumb in late August today. However, Bashar is not likely to bat in the nets.

"We are going to have longer batting sessions for individuals on the central wickets from tomorrow. Each batsman will spend 30 to 40 minutes in the middle in a bid to improve their concentration level which is the main concern at this moment. I am really excited with the plan," said Mottau.

Mottau has been working with the Tigers from the beginning of the year in his capacity as a batting coach but there has not been any marked improvement in Bangla-desh's batting except for some unexpected resistance from the tail-enders during the tour of the West Indies.

But the coach was not ready to accept that the batting standard has come down.

"They have had two bad one-day tournaments but they batted very well in the West Indies. And there is no doubt that they are improving," said Mottau.

When asked whether he found any glaring technical deficiencies in the Bangladeshi batsmen, Mottau said he looked at technique in a different way.

"Of course they have technical faults but it is not only a problem with Bangladeshi players only. Even Brian Lara has some technical weaknesses. We can't change it overnight. It will take some time but they are getting better. I have confidence in them. You have to keep faith in the technique they have at the moment.

'I think the real problem is that they play too many shots too early and that is an area we have to work on."
