Uttara suburb without water for 8 months

An acute shortage of water has been plaguing the residents of Dakshinkhan union of suburban Uttara for more than eight months.

Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) supplies only about four percent of the total demand for water in the locality.

Wasa sources said the lone water pump of Dakshinkhan can produce 22 lakh litres of water a day while the six lakh inhabitants of the area need at least six crore litres.

"Wasa supplies water only for a few minutes at night and that too can be anytime. So, we have to lie sleepless not to miss the water," said Tanjil Mahmud, a resident of the area.

Narrating the inconvenience resulted from the water crisis, another resident Kabir Ahamed said "I have to go to my sister's house daily to take a bath."

He thinks the authorities concerned do not pay any attention to the longstanding water crisis in Dakshinkhan because the locality stands detached from the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).

"We spend most of our daytime fetching water from different areas," said Rahima Khatun, a housewife of the neighbourhood.

Dakshinkhan Union Parishad Chairman Khalil Molla said, "The union needs at least five water pumps as its population is more than six lakh."

"We've already allocated necessary land to the Wasa and installation work of a new pump station is going on," he said.

He requested the authorities concerned to ensure adequate water supply before the Ramadan.

"We need to install more water pumps to resolve the crisis in Dakshinkhan. But financial and capacity limitations do not allow us to do so," said Managing Director of Dhaka Wasa ANH Akhter Hossain.

Besides, scarcity of land is another obstacle to installing more water pumps, he added.

Akhter Hossain, however, said the present water crisis of the area will soon be over with the installation of new water pump.

He said the new water pump that will produce 40/50 lakh litres of water a day, will hopefully start operating before Ramadan.
