The three-day exhibition of cosmetics, toiletries and perfumeries -- COTOPEX-2004 -- concluded yesterday amid huge turnout of visitors at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel. Organisers said every participating company recorded a turnover between Tk 8,000 to Tk 10,000 a day. MK Zaman, general manager of Triune Exhibition and Event Management Services (TEEMS), the organiser of the event, said a total of 20,000 visitors attended the three-day exposition. He said the fair was aimed at helping the local entrepreneurs to expand their activities and encourage new investment in the sector. "So far, we received tremendous response from the people and most of them appreciated the quality of local products," said an exhibitor at the stall of Square Toiletries Ltd. "Although we haven't received any export order, some local buyers showed keen interest in our products," said Mir Monirul Hossen, officer (marketing) of the company. Amirul Islam, an exhibitor of Kohinoor Chemical Ltd, said his company has received some spot export orders from Indian buyers for products such as Tibbet brand bottle gourd hair oil and face cream. Tanzina Runi, a student from City College in Dhaka, said the fair has provided an opportunity to get a clear idea about local cosmetics, toiletries and perfumes that will help her to compare local products with foreign ones. Now, Bangladesh exports toiletries and cosmetics products to Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, India, France, US, Germany, Spain and Middle Eastern countries. According to Export Promotion Bureau statistics, Bangladesh earned Tk 9.46 crore from export of cosmetics in the last fiscal year. Apart from some foreign companies a total of 28 companies participated in the fair. Following the success of the fair the organisers hope to host similar exposition every year.
