Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader of Sylhet city unit and a pedestrian sustained bullet injuries as armed young men fired on them yesterday afternoon at the city's Shahjalal Upashahar area. The injured persons had been identified as Wasimuzzaman Rony, a JCD leader and Kamal Ahmed, a pedestrian. Both of them had been admitted into the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Rony said that he had asked Shaista, a youngman peddling heroin at the city's Bhatpara area, not to sell the item in the locality. At this, Shaista and his abettor Shamsuzzaman alias Zaman, a former leader of JCD, swooped on me, Rony claimed. While he was on a motorbike on his way home at Shibganj area from Shahjalal Upashahar, Zaman and Shaista in an auto rickshaw chased him and fired all on a sudden. Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, president of JCD district unit, blamed Zaman for the incident. Filing of a case was under process, he added. Meanwhile, a police team raided the house of Zaman at Shibganj in the afternoon but failed to nab him. However, about 10 gunshots were exchanged before Zaman escaped. A police official admitted the exchange of gunshots saying they will file a case. Shamsuzzaman Zaman, an ex-leader of JCD and former organizing secretary of district BNP, was expelled from the party on the eve of the city corporation elections in March last year.
