Deadlock at DU rolls to 20th day
DU Correspondent
An indefinite strike enforced by six opposition-backed student organisations at Dhaka University (DU) to press home their seven-point demand, and the DU authorities' apparent reluctance to meet the demands have seen the stalemate continue for 20 days to this day. The student organisations said they will not call off the strike until their demands are fulfilled. Campus sources said the DU authorities are yet to take any steps to resolve the crisis through discussion with leaders of the student bodies, including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). DU Proctor Prof AK Firoz Ahmed however said they have taken initiatives to meet some demands of the student organisations. BCL President Liaqat Sikder said they would call off the strike any time if the authorities meet their demands. Meanwhile, the DU authorities yesterday postponed all examinations scheduled for the day, except Computer Science and Biology departments' examinations, until October 7 because of the strike. Other examination dates would remain unchanged and fresh dates of the postponed examinations would be announced soon, said a press release of the university. The indefinite strike followed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal's attack on a rally of the six student organisations and ransacking of the room of DU Teachers' Association president.
