Civic sense
I Rahman, Uttara resident
There was a time when we were schooled on a subject called civics; but it was a time of few cars and fewer buses and some bullock carts as well, on our roads. Times have changed and so did the traffic on our roads and highways.Travel any given day (Sunday-Thursday) towards Uttara between 2:30 and 3:00 and you'll find that cars parked (four-deep in some places) on the main thoroughfare in front of Scholastica school has created a horrendous, bottleneck, traffic situation for all the north-bound vehicles starting at the roundabout of the Airport entrance/exit. Someone please tell us who gave them the right to rob us off of our time, energy and money; not to mention of the mental anguish it causes the individual operators of these inconvenienced (wedged-in) vehicles jockeying for position to get out of the mess as quickly as possible. Oh, and need I mention about the cost incurred for all the minor fender-bender and unsightly scratches on the vehicles for simply trying to squeeze by? All these cars, concentrating in one small area, spewing out toxic fumes must be contributing to a disastrous polluted environment for the residents nearby, including the students of the said school. It is quite possible that the cars could form a single file close to the shoulders of the main highway. It may even be better if some of the cars are parked on the east side of the median (divide) and facing south. The kids can use the newly constructed overbridge to cross over to get to their homebound cars. In passing, please permit me to remind that civics is the branch of political science that deals with civic affairs and the duties and rights of citizens.
