UN urges Sudan to accept int'l troops

The UN special envoy to Sudan on Thursday urged the Khartoum government to let thousands of international troops help end attacks on the population of the troubled Darfur region.

The envoy, Jan Pronk, reported to the UN Security Council as Darfur rebels refused to discuss disarming at peace talks in Nigeria organised by the African Union, which has led efforts to end the crisis that has seen up to 50,000 people killed.

"We urge the government, if it is unable to fully protect its citizens by itself, to seek, request and accept assistance from the international community," Pronk said, calling for "an expanded AU mission in Darfur."

Asked how many observers were needed, Pronk said: "thousands ... three thousand is not enough."
