Cuta calls off strike

The Chittagong University Teachers' Association (Cuta) on Thursday called off its indefinite strike following a fruitful meeting with the Vice Chancellor.

VC Prof AJM Nuruddin Chowdhury at a two-hour meeting starting from 2 pm assured the Cuta leaders that their two-point demand would be fulfilled.

He also pledged to cancel the advertisement made without recommendation of the Planning Committee for recruitment of teachers in Zoology Department.

Cuta leaders urged the VC to uphold the CU Act of 1973 and not to do anything violating rules.

Among others Cuta President Prof Dr Nurul Anwar, General Secretary Prof Dr Gazi Saleh Uddin and Pro VC Prof M Shamsuddin were present at the meeting.

The Cuta had started the indefinite strike on August 23 as the CU Syndicate ignored its demands.

The demands are cancellation of the "illegal" process for promotion of Dr. Abu Tyeb Chowdhury, a Jamaat-e-Islami backed Associate Professor of Geography Department and appointment of 57 teachers allegedly made by defying Planning Committee recommendations.

Classes and other academic activities will resume today.
