Swapan is secretary of Babuganj upazila Awmi League and allegedly belongs to Kamrul group of outlawed Sarbahara party, police said.

He was on top of a lost 37 criminals wanted by police.

Abdus Salehin, OC of Babuganj thana, said Swapan faces at least four cases including one for gouging out eyes of Khasru and

Rashedul. Khasru was the son of outlaw Mainuddin, a former UP chairman belonging to rival Zia group.

Swapan was produced before court, which sent him to jail, rejecting a bail prayer. Police said they will seek his remand for interrogation.

Barisal Awami League leaders have condemned the arrest and demanded his release.

Some supporters of Swapan claimed that the arrested was an act of political revenge. He has dispute with the local lawmaker and leaders of the ruling party, they claimed.
