Protesters attack news media from anti-Bush rally

Opponents of President George W. Bush railed at the US media on Wednesday, particularly television news, which they accuse of giving the Republican administration an easy time.

The Fox News network was their main target -- but protesters who joined the "March on the Media" also took aim at networks such as Cable News Network (CNN) and the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS).

"For the past few years the mainstream media have marched in lock step with the Bush administration. Now it's time to march on the media," said Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), a liberal group that has monitored the news media since 1986.

"Whether the issue is the Iraq war, the 2000 Florida recount, the Patriot Act or post-September 11 detentions, the mainstream media have behaved more like lapdogs than watchdogs," the group said.

In front of the Madison Square Garden, where the Republican National Convention is being held, a giant sign reads: "Fox News: America's newsroom. We report, you decide."

During an anti-Bush demonstration on Sunday that drew up to 200,000 people, the crowd chanted "Down with Fox!" when they marched past the sign.
