Foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia rose by 48 percent in 2003, demonstrating the region's resilience in the face of setbacks, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) said Thursday. In a year which opened with the Sars crisis and uncertainty over the effects of the Iraq war, foreign direct investment (FDI) rose to 20.3 billion dollarsr, asean trade ministers said in a statement after a meeting here. The figures follow a slump in Asean's FDI between 2000 and 2002, which came on the heels of an initial rebound following the regional economic crisis in 1997-1998.
