Thai state bank under fire over Myanmar loan

A Thai Senate panel has criticised a state bank for lending $15 million to military-ruled Myanmar for a project to be run by a firm founded by Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawtra, its chairman said Thursday.

The senate foreign affairs committee took the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM) to task for financing a high-speed Internet project in Myanmar using a satellite operated by Shin Satellite, Kraisak Choonhavan said.

"Why on the earth does a least developed country like Myanmar need a high-speed Internet project?" Kraisak asked Reuters.
