Suicide by female school teacher
Will the perpetrators go scot free again?
The news of any young person taking his or her own life is sad and tragic by itself, but it takes a different dimension when one learns the reason for such an untimely demise. Selina Akhter, a twenty one year old school teacher in a small village of Naogaon committed suicide because a group of three eve teasers in the same village made her life such a hell that she had no other choice. The humiliation, disgrace and shame that she had to encounter forced her to take such a drastic step.

According to reports, three youths of the same area used to harass Selina regularly; one of them even proposed to her. He threatened to throw acid on her face if she dared to decline the offer. But the last straw was when these three hooligans broke into her home and attempted to rape her. Though she was rescued by her neighbours, Selina, humiliated and angry at the turn of events, consumed poison and died later at the hospital.

This whole incident reminds us of many similar cases of suicide by young girls in recent time. First it was Simi, followed by Fahima and Rumi. In fact Rumi hanged herself in her own home when a group of local 'mastans' were trying to break the door with a 'mission to kidnap her' in broad daylight! This must stop.

Why should young girls sacrifice their lives for no fault of theirs? Why couldn't the authority and the society ensure their safety and security? Since, according to newspaper reports, these three youths were already notorious for their unruly behaviour, especially with the girls of the area, we fail to understand why weren't they taken to task by the local elders and leaders earlier?

And the less said about the police, the better. It's been more than ten days since the incident, and the culprits, who had driven Selina to despair that she had to take her life, have already been identified, but police is yet to nab any of them. We strongly condemn the indifference shown by the law enforcing agency. We demand immediate arrest and exemplary punishments for the three youths responsible for Selina's death.
