FBI investigators
Public confidence on the investigation likely to rise
Now that the FBI operatives are in the city to help us get to the bottom of the monstrous August 21 attack on an AL rally, there is reason to believe that the investigation will gather the much needed pace and momentum. We fully endorse the idea of seeking the help of the FBI, which has acquired special expertise to detect terrorists. One of the good things about the decision to invite the FBI is that it will help restore people's confidence in the investigation process, which has been badly jolted in recent times by the law enforcers' failure to make any headway in the bomb attack cases. It is also an indication of the realization dawning upon the government that investigation into the killings has assumed the overtone of a national, or even international demand, that can hardly be ignored. The aggrieved party , that is the main opposition AL, should also feel happy about the arrival of the FBI experts, as it was the party's demand that international investigation agencies be brought to the scene. Of course, the demand was fair enough, given the poor performance record of the local investigators. So , the government has taken a right step towards authentic and , more important, 'credible' investigation into the bomb attack, resolution of which is imperative to bring back normalcy to the country's political arena. However, the job of ensuring justice will not be over with merely availing the services of the FBI. The investigation , we believe, may lead to unearthing of some unpleasant truths, which may come close to home for powerful political figures. But under no circumstances should the government allow the matter to be politicised or subverted by any quarters. Remember, the investigators may have to cover a lot of slippery ground , thanks to the nature of the crime . And it is the government which must give clear directives to all its investigative arms to extend full cooperation to get to the root of this crime. The government must remember the whole world is watching as to how impartially it conducts this investigation. Much of the government's credibility depends on this.
