2,500-acre land spotted for 5 satellite towns

The district administrations of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur yesterday submitted to a parliamentary body a list of over 2,500-acre government land for setting up five satellite towns in the districts for low and middle income groups.

The district administrations submitted the list at a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the land ministry. The parliamentary body is working to identify the land and will later recommend the government to build the satellite towns.

"I personally discussed the issue with Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

She (PM) is willing to build the satellite towns," Mahbubur Rahman, chairman of the parliamentary body, told reporters after the meeting.

"The land ministry high-ups and the parliamentary body will soon visit the sites proposed by the district administrations. If we find those fit for the towns, we'll recommend the government to initiate project in this regard," Mahbubur added.

The parliamentary body also discussed the status of pending cases related to land acquisition since 1948. As many as 743 cases between the government and affected people are pending.

The affected people, whose land has been acquired by the government, will get Tk 342 crore in compensation.

Dhaka district administration told the meeting that it already has the money and will distribute among the affected within a few months. It also assured the parliamentary committee of resolving the pending cases within a year.
