BNP leader shot dead in city

Unknown assailants yesterday gunned down a ruling BNP leader and businessman at his office in Shyampur and three youths stabbed an electrician to death in Cantonment Wednesday night.

Up to seven youths stormed into the office of Fasiur Rahman alias Bashir, 43, secretary of ward No. 90 unit BNP and owner of Meghna Food Products, in Alambagh at around 8:30am, said his younger brother Mushfiqur Rahman.

They opened fire on him and fled the scene, witnesses said.

With two bullets in his head and four in stomach, Bashir was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died at 9:30am.

"Bashir was one of the major witnesses to the killing of former commissioner Shahadat Hossain of ward No. 90 in September 2002 and plaintiff of my another brother Mukhleshur Rahman murder case in November 1999," Mushfiqur said. The accused in the cases might have killed him, he alleged.

In Cantonment, three youths called in 14-year-old Shamim Ahmed, electrician, for a repair in the house of Meher Ali in South Manikdi at 8:00pm.

As Shamim sought his leave after repairing, the youths beat up him and stabbed in his throat. He was rushed to Combined Medical Hospital where he died at 11:00pm.

A housewife, meanwhile, suffered bullet injury in crossfire in Ramna yesterday.

Rita Begum, 20, wife of electrician Hossain Miah of Mirbagh in Maghbazar, was bullet-hit in a shootout between two local groups in Hazipara at 10:00am, said her sister Salma. She is now receiving treatment at the DMCH.

However, family sources said her brother-in-law Zaman following a feud shot at his brother Hossain but hit Rita.
