Theatre activities start again

More than 85 theatrical groups under the Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation and the Bangladesh Mahila Samity authority decided to stop the regular staging of plays at its theatre hall. This was in protest against the killing of Ivy Rahman, the President of the Bangladesh Mahila Samity and to protest the attack on their General Secretary Advocate Sahara Khatun on August 21.

As a result, no plays have been staged at any theatre halls in Dhaka City over the last week.

However, theatre activists believe that it is time for them to go back to their regular activities. Ramendu Majumdar and Ataur Rahman, President and General Secretary of ITI Bangladesh, along with Mamunur Rashid and Liaquat Ali Lucky, President and General Secretary of BGTF respectively, are of the opinion that to continue the pause in theatrical activities any more will 'mean the victory of the evil'.

Aranyak Natyadal is staging the premier show of Raaraang at the National Theatre Stage at Shilpakala Academy today. Mamunur Rashid says, 'We have asked the police to provide us required security during the shows.' Liaquat Ali Lucky, informs, 'BGTF has got a metal detector and we have asked all the theatrical groups to use it before the shows at the Mahila Samity Hall.'
