Remembering the great composer
Altaf Mahmud
Novera Deepita
August 30 was the death anniversary of the venerable music director Altaf Mahmud. To commemorate this event, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy arranged a cultural programme including a discussion session on Tuesday last. Altaf Mahmud is widely known for his famous music composition of Amar Bhaier Rakte Rangano Ekushe February/Ami ki bhulite pari?. The song, which commemorates the martyrs of the language movement, has secured him a unique position in the hearts of the Bangladeshis. Altaf Mahmud was one of the pioneers who struggled for Bangla culture. He greatly inspired the freedom fighters and pro-Liberation forces in 1971 by composing and singing patriotic songs. These were broadcast by Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. In addition, he supported the freedom fighters by providing them essentials. This led to his arrest by the Pakistani Army from his residence on August 30, 1971. Thereafter, he was brutally killed by them. In the discussion session, presided over by the Secretary of the Academy, Khurshid Alam, the main speakers were Ajit Roy, cultural personality Ashfaqur Rahman Khan, Shafi Kamal of the Academy and the wife of Altaf Mahmud, Begum Sara Ara Mahmud. The discussants focused on the life and creations of the martyred music director. Later, the students and teachers of Shahid Altaf Mahmud Sangeet Bidya Niketon (Martyred Altaf Mahmud Music School) rendered two songs put to tune by the great composer. The popular song Amar Bhaier was rendered in its entirety, including the part which remains unsung usually. The poor quality rendition however, disappointed the audience. It was a great relief when the eminent folk singer Rathindranath Roy came on stage with the patriotic folk song Rashtrobhasha Aldolon. His passionate rendition held the audience in its grip. Next came Ajit Roy with two more numbers tuned by Altaf Mahmud. Dhonya he dhonya jibon was a very rhythmic piece with the prominence of tabla. Bolo Bir Bolo unnato mama shir, the legendary poem by Kazi Nazrul Islam, was a spirited tune by Altaf Mahmud. This conveyed the true spirit of a hero.
