'Allow local govts to lease markets'

Local government leaders at a press conference here on Tuesday demanded return of their power to lease local markets.This empower local governments and enhance their financial capability, which will held local development, they said at the press conference held at Kushtia Reporter's Unity office under the banner of National Union Parishad Forum' (NUPF). They leaders said, in the subcontinent, local governments had been leasing markets for about 150 years before the previous Awami League government snatched away their right. Now the lease is given by the local administrations. They said snatching of the power has crippled local governments and also throttled grassroots level democracy. The present government talks of democracy but taking no steps to empower local governments, they alleged. NUPF Kushtia President Basirul Alam Chad, its secretary Atahar Ali, Mizanur Rahman of WAVE, a local NGO working for strengthening local governments spoke at the press conference.
