Failed attempt to resume RU classes

Authorities of Rajshahi University on Tuesday made a failed attempt to reopen the campus while Bangladesh Chhatra League continued to enforce an indefinite strike protesting the August 21 grenade attack ion Dhaka.

RU authorities dame the attempt following a series of meetings with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir and police administration since Monday.

The authorities asked the teachers to take classes and hold examinations on schedule and assured them security, but a few responded to the call.

Huge contingents of paramilitary BDR and police were deployed on the campus and at different points in the city since Tuesday morning.

University buses escorted by activists of JCD and ICS roamed in the city, but no student boarded those fearing violence.

BCL workers tried to barricade the buses at different points including Binodpur and Katakhali at around 12pm, but police and JCD men drove them away.

A few pro-Jamaat-e-Islami teachers took classes but no examination was held. Many departments remained closed.

RU BCL President Ibrahim Hossain told newsmen later that the strike would continue till it is withdrawn by the central leaders. He alleged that police raided houses and dormitory rooms of some BCL leaders on Monday.

Talking to newsmen, RU Students Advisor Zahid Hossain explained the authority's position and said the strike should be withdrawn to avert session jam.
