Shop employee, extortionist shot dead

A gang of robbers shot dead a man at Shaympur and a youth died from bullet wound at Badda in the city yesterday.

Shafiqul Islam, 56, an employee of an optical shop, was shot in his stomach when he tried to resist the robbers who entered his house by cutting open the grills of the balcony at around 3.30am.

He was rushed to Mitford Hospital where the doctors declared him dead at 6.00am.

The robbers ransacked the entire house in search of valuables after confining all the family members to a room at gunpoint.

Shafiqul's wife and daughter cried for help when the robbers tried to snatch ornaments from them.

As Shafiqul came to the aid of his wife and daughter, the robbers shot him.

His wife Rehana Begum filed a case with Shympur Police Station.

In another incident, Gulshan police recovered the body of a youth near Gulshan Shooting Club at around 2.00pm.

The bullet-hit youth identified as Hanif, 30, was passing through the area but succumbed to his injuries when he reached the club, police said quoting local people.

Hanif himself was an extortionist of Badda area. He received the bullet in his chest during a gunfight between two groups of hoodlums in Badda about half an hour earlier, police said.

Critically injured Hanif hired a rickshaw, but the rickshawpuller dumped him beside the shooting club.

Local people informed the police who recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
