Govt to allow import of 1 lakh tonne salt this year

The government has decided to allow import of one lakh metric tonne of salt this year to meet the shortfall in local production due to floods.The decision was taken at a high-level meeting at the commerce ministry here yesterday with Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury in the chair. The minister said the total demand for salt this year was estimated at 12 lakh metric tonnes, but the country produced 11 lakh metric tonnes, marking a shortfall of the one lakh MT as the production was hampered due to the devastating floods, he added. As per the assessment made by the Ministry of Industries the government has decided to import the salt to keep the salt price at reasonable level, Altaf said.
