Shibir men chop dead JCD leader

Armed cadres of Islami Chhatra Shibir chopped a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader dead and injured some others at Sylhet Government Veterinary College in the early hours of yesterday. The victim is Rafiqul Hasan Sohag, organising secretary of college unit of the JCD, and a 3rd year student. The college has been closed sine die following the incident as tension prevails on the campus. Police later caught two Shibir cadres suspecting their involvement in the murder and recovered some arms from the possession of shibir men. Agitated JCD activists ransacked some of rooms of Shibir workers at the college dormitory. Police and college sources said Shibir activist Golam Kibria had assaulted Sohag early Wednesday night near the new dormitory of the college and some other students took an initiative to settle the matter. Accordingly, Sohag informed college unit JCD President Mizan of the incident and college unit Shibir Secretary Mamnun agreed to sit for a settlement half an hour later. But soon after, Shibir men laid a siege to the dormitory and attacked JCD men. They chopped Sohag with 'ramdao' injuring him fatally and fled the spot. He was Rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 1-20 am. Later, police and Rapid Action Battalion officials led by two magistrates searched the college and the dormitory as well as the nearby MC College and Sylhet Sarkari College dormitories. Police nabbed two shibir cadres -- Zahed Hossain of village Bhatiana under Sitakunda of Chittagong, and ABM Mofiqul Haque of Sarail in Brahmanbaria -- suspecting their involvement in the killing. They also recovered seven 'chapatis' and one ramdao and one motorbike from the room of Sarkari College Shibir unit president and two chapatis from the Veterinary College dormitory. Namaj- e - janaza of Sohag was held on the college premises and his body was sent to his village home in Doarabazar upazila of Sunamganj in the afternoon. The district and city units of the JCD brought out a procession protesting the murder A group of agitated JCD men pelted stones at a shopping mall and a boutique store known said to be owned by Jamaat-Shibir men. The principal of the college filed a case with Kotwali Police Station, accusing six of killing Sohag. Earlier in September 2002, Shirbir men had chopped JCD activist Doyel to death on the campus of Madan Mohan College.
