Thoughts of a senior citizen
Dr. KM Maqsudur Rahman, Chairperson, Saleha Health Centre, Gulshan North C/A, Dhaka-1212,
I was stunned when I heard the news of the grenade blasts at the AL protest meeting on 21/08/04. The carnage scene that I saw in our TV channels (not BTV) blunted my thoughts. I lost the language to condemn it. The whole world has condemned the heinous crime. Furthermore, they have echoed our wishes to have a thorough and impartial enquiry by the competent persons. Here I would like to recall some of the thoughts that occurred to me at the time of Khaleda Zia's taking power in 2001. I had sent a few massages to Hawa Bhaban in which I congratulated her, and requested her to take immediate and merciless action against terrorists and other criminals. The present countrywide lawlessness is very much alarming particularly due to involvement of BNP workers. The terrorists that have surfaced since the last elections are deadlier than international terrorists. Now the government needs to take ruthless action against the party thugs. However, under the circumstances, our only hope lies on the news media as most of the media are neutrally publishing the news and views, and echoing the peoples' anger and anguish. I am now 75 years old and have had the occasion to see and meet many important political leaders including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In fact, I had participated in the 1946 election, the language movement as a medical college student, and also in the liberation war. I wish I did not live to see the August 21 carnage. Finally, I pray for the salvation of the departed souls.
