The Sundarbans
Md Tariqul Islam, Divisional Forest Officer
The Sundarbans earned Bangladesh the reputation of conserving the largest mangrove forests in the World. Therefore it implies not only a track of forests but also an important image. For Bangladesh the value of such image is simply great. Every citizen feels proud of having the richest and most diversified mangrove forests in the world, which also have made them concerned about protection of the same.Things are not moving on the right track! The Sundarbans is depleting. In this regard, some vital issues can be taken into consideration. First, how forest officials are performing their duties? Second, what is happening to the people and transports being arrested or seized during committing crimes in the forests? How the parts of Sundarbans being managed in India? So, though some forest and other officials are causing direct depletion of Sundarbans by assisting illegal traders, we have to address some other issues as well to get at the truth. To stop direct depletion, better management strategy is needed. And that is true about indirect depletion also. We have to create the conditions in which honest forest officials can work without any inhibition.
