Tk 360 cr DFID aid for road maintainance

British Department for International Development (DFID) will provide Tk 360 crore in financial assistance under the Periodic Maintenance Programme of Roads and Highways department for repair, restructure and maintenance of post-flood road communication infrastructures.

The donor agency has also agreed to give additional Tk 39 crore as an initial support under the post-flood emergency road communication restoration programme.

A visiting DFID delegation led by its Infrastructure and Livelihood Adviser Michael Scott told it at a meeting on post-flood road maintenance and rehabilitation programmes with Communications Minister Nazmul Huda at the ministry yesterday.

The meeting was told that some 2,962-km roads under Roads and Highways department have been damaged during the recent devastating flood.

The DFID delegation appreciated the steps to set up road fund by the government for proper maintenance and strengthening the road communication network. "After setting up the fund, ADB, World Bank, DFID and other donor agencies will be able to play a greater role for the development and maintenance of road communication infrastructures," the delegation said.

Huda sought cooperation from DFID in collecting portable steel bridges for restructuring the flood-ravaged road communication infrastructures.

Communications Secretary M Shafiqul Islam, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Sheikh Rabiul Islam and higher officials of the ministry were present.
