Corruption obstacle to quality education
Speakers tell workshop


Speakers at a workshop yesterday said quality of education is yet to be achieved although a large portion of national budget goes to this sector.

They said education sector should be given more focus in media to ensure quality education.

The workshop on 'Education for All' was organised by Mass-Line Media Centre, a non-government organisation, in the city.

Noted academic Prof Sirajul Islam Chowdhury said corruption in the education sector is a major impediment to ensuring quality education.

"Teachers are appointed in schools and colleges in exchange of money which hinders the delivery of quality education," he added.

Prof Chowdhury said coaching centres have replaced classroom teachings at secondary level creating negative impact on education,

About English teaching, he said exclusion of literature from secondary and higher secondary curriculum cannot be accepted.

"Without literature no one can learn English language properly," said Prof Chowdhury who is also a professor of University Grants Commission.

Prof Ahmed Kamal of Dhaka University said bureaucracy is a major hindrance to the development of education.

He said quality of education and quality of media are interrelated as without proper education it is not possible to ensure the quality of media.

Tasneen Athar, deputy director of Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), said access to education has increased but quality of education is yet to be achieved.

Unesco Representative Wolfgang Vollmann and MMC Executive Director Kamrul Hasan Manju also spoke.
