Special court to give verdict today

A special court today announces verdict in an income tax corruption case against former president HM Ershad.

According to sources, Judge Rezaul Karim Khan of the Special Court for Dhaka Division pronounces the verdict at 11:30am.

Earlier, the prosecution and defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 12 prosecution witnesses in the case.

The Bureau of Anti-corruption filed the case with Ramna Police Station on July 27, 1992 accusing Ershad and three tax officials.

In the case, it was alleged that Ershad, while in power, paid Tk 7,43,416 as income tax for six years (1983-1989). Later, he withdrew Tk 2,76,324 from the income tax amount without submitting any documents in favour of his action.

The investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet naming Ershad as the lone accused on December 19 the same year.

The court framed charges against the former president on January 26, 1994 and the trial began on June 26, 2003.
