5 Khulna cops closed for dining with drug-peddlers

Two sub-inspectors (SIs) and three constables of Sonadanga Police Station were suspended and closed to the police lines yesterday as they dined with three notorious drug traffickers Tuesday night.

They are SIs Abul Hossain and Zahidur Rahman and constables Abu Saleh, Abul Bashar and Abul Fazal, who had dinner with the drug traffickers at hotel Western Inn on upper Jessore Road.

The officer-in-charge of Sonadanga Police Station said Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the drug traffickers -- Shajahan Howlader, Moazzem Hossain and Shafiqul Islam -- from the hotel.

The acting police commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) said the suspended policemen were charged with neglect of duty and having link with criminals.

KMP sources said SI Zahidur maintained close link with extremists and drug traders since joining Sonadanga Police Station three months back. SI Abul used to receive bribes threatening drug addicts with implication of murder cases, they alleged.
