Sumon school chess champ


Sumon Basu of Kolkata Madiyagram High Cchool emerged unbeaten champion in the senior event of the Sixth Standard Chartered School Chess Tournament yesterday.

He and local player Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar finished with eight points each after the ninth and final round at the federation auditorium but Sumon was declared champion after progressive tie-breaking system was applied.

In the last round of the Class VI to X group, Sumon drew with Elin and Sagar beat Sankalpa.

Later, Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed distributed prizes among the winners as chief guest. SAA Masrur, acting chief executive officer of Standard Chartered bank, was also present.

A total of 170 players including nine Indians took part in the three categories.
