Criminals' release sparks surprise

The release of two alleged criminals from the custody of detectives in Khulna four hours after arrest on Sunday afternoon prompted sharp reactions from senior police officers and other people.Witnesses said a team of detectives arrested Bachchu, 38, and Kamal, 34, bodyguards of Asaduzzaman Litu, main chargesheeted accused in the Dainik Janakantha journalist Shamsur Rahman murder case, and seized a revolver from Bachchu. "I have opened a probe into the allegation of releasing the two," said Deputy Commissioner (South) Akbar Ali of Khulna Metropolitan Police. Officer-in-Charge Mosharef Hossain of Khulna Police Station said he was aware of the allegation and added: "I received many phone calls about the allegation."
