Russell takes oath as youngest MP

Zahid Ahsan Russell, elected from Gazipur-2 constituency, took oath as the youngest lawmaker of the eighth parliament at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban yesterday.

Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar administered the oath at his chamber. Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) published the gazette notification of the election result and dispatched it to Parliament Secretariat.

Russell, 26, has defeated BNP-Jamaat-led four party alliance candidate and former minister MA Mannan in Sunday's by-election by 47,933 votes. The seat fell vacant after his father Ahsanullah Master was gunned down on May 7.

After the oath taking, Russell said he would work for the development of his constituency and its people who voted him to the parliament.

Referring to the slaying of his father, Russell said, "It's not merely an election victory, rather it's people's verdict against the killers of Ahsanullah Master. I'll raise the issue in parliament and demand exemplary punishment to the killers at the shortest possible time."

He sought co-operation from everyone and said credit for the victory goes to Awami League (AL) and its leader Sheikh Hasina, late Ahsanullah Master and above all, the people of Tongi and Gazipur. He expressed his gratitude to the people of Gazipur for voting for him braving all odds and obstacles.

Later, Russell met the Opposition Leader and AL chief Sheikh Hasina at the latter's Sudha Sadan residence.

"During the meeting, she advised me to complete the Bar at Law and assured me of making necessary arrangements for my education", the newly elected lawmaker said.
